Monsoon season in the East Valley runs roughly mid-June to the end of September. The visible part is the wall of dust crossing the valley ahead of a storm. The part that matters for your house is what happens in the hours afterward, when that suspended material settles.
It is already inside
Monsoon dust is extremely fine. It comes in around window frames, under doors, through the gap where the garage meets the house, and on everyone's shoes. A closed house is not a sealed house. By the end of a storm season there is a measurable layer on every horizontal surface above eye level, which is precisely where nobody looks.
Where it lands first
High and flat. Ceiling fan blades are the worst offender — they collect a thick felt of dust while stationary, and then you turn them on in October and redistribute the entire season across the room in about four minutes. After that: the tops of upper cabinets, door and window frames, return air vents, the top edge of picture frames, and blind slats.
Why October is worse than August
During the storms, the dust is still going up. Afterwards it comes down. Material that settled on high surfaces in July gets disturbed by fans, air conditioning cycling, doors closing, and normal movement, and it migrates down onto counters, floors and furniture for weeks. Your house does not get dusty during monsoon season so much as it gets loaded, and then unloads on you through the autumn.
The vent problem
Return air vents pull household air through a filter, which means they pull monsoon dust through it too. A filter that would normally last three months does not last three months through a monsoon. When the filter loads up, more fine material gets past it and into the ducts, and then back out through the supply vents onto everything.
What actually removes it
Dry dusting a fan blade with a feather duster launches the dust into the air and it lands somewhere else in the same room. The same is true of dry-wiping cabinet tops and blinds. It needs to be captured on a damp cloth or pulled into a vacuum, working top down so anything dislodged falls onto surfaces you have not cleaned yet.
Order matters more than product here: fans and high surfaces first, then mid-level furniture and sills, then floors last. Clean the floors first and you will be cleaning them again.
